Kenny - need your help....

Please everyone other than Kenny reading this thread, please stay out of this and try not to bash. It is a thread with a purpose to get Kenny's advise on a psych question.

Kenny - can retarded individuals be rehabilitated from PTSD? Or do they lack the neurological/psychological capacity to successful undergo emotionally treatment?

That is an excellent question and having Practiced as a Psychiatrist for a short while, I can honestly say that I never had a Patient who was Retarded that also suffered from PTSD...

However, I did treat many patients with PTSD, and I do believe it is possible to get them better even if retarded, so long as the mental retardation isn't so off the scale that the pt. couldn't hear or understand anything that was said to him/her..

My 2 cents..

In my dealings with conditions of post-traumatic stress disorder I find that there is sadly not sufficient study on the subject of PTSD in people with learning disabilities. Oftentimes studies on the general public are not thought to relate to those whom we call "retarded".

In people with learning disabilities, as well as "normal" people, the events that lead to this neurophysiological disorder include the duration of the exposure of the trauma as well as the type of trauma. In other words, it is my opinion that PTSD in people with learning disabilities should be treated individually just like people without learning disabilities because the cause for the PTSD can vary widely.

So are saying there is hope for ID or is her situation untreatable? I"ve suspected the retarded angle for awhile but I'm glad it's finally come out into the open.

I stayed out of this thread when it was in the main forum out of respect for the retarded BUT what MAX1234 said is exactly what I was thinking.....Great POST MAX....
